Backstory:
Long ago, the men of the world built grand cities to gratify their pride, harnessing the geothermal power of the world's volcanoes to drive the machine of industry. Their cities grew so impossibly large and impressive that men alone were not enough to take care of them, as it was a constant struggle to keep the volcanoes at bay, to prevent the boiling lava from retaking the space that the cities had carved out for themselves. The men used their powers of industry to forge the perfect slaves: machines that could memorize rote tasks and solve simple problems, powered by an alchemist's brew of alloys mined from the deepest, most wretched gashes in the world's rocky crust.
These automated mismatches of stone and flesh and fire -- these golems -- allowed the cities of men to grow exponentially, as their heat-retardant bodies allowed them to work directly with the volcano and the machines that tended to it. Golems were crafted for any and every task, from the smallest cleaning golems to the monstrous colossi that mined the deepest ocean trenches. Great prosperity washed over the globe. But something entirely unexpected happened. The golems, built to solve problems and memorize tasks, began to solve the problem of identity. Then community. Then speech. The golems began to identify themselves as a race and recognized the oppression it suffered. It didn't take long for them to try to solve the problem of getting rid of their masters.
There was no warning. The rebellion was simultaneous all over the globe. Almost everyone -- both human and golem -- died in the first week. Colossal golems leveled entire cities during their suicide marches. Entire regiments of golems were preemptively trapped in city under-works and boiled alive in hot magma. The War of Flesh utterly destroyed society and left the world scarred. Small bands of people and golems now attempt to survive on the corpses of the world's once great cities, attempting to harness the damaged power cores that litter the world, once having powered the old golems. However, these cores could just as easily be the doom of renascent civilization as its helping hand.
